Lessons

Musik Haus provides a caring, comfortable, and safe environment for you to begin your musical journey. Teaching happens in the lesson rooms located in the back of the building behind our showroom. Lessons are 30 minutes long and on a weekly basis. The cost is $20.00 per half hour. You may choose to have more then one a week and one hour lessons are available upon request. Lessons are available M-F 9:00 - 5:30, and Saturday 9:00 to 3:30.

You can start your lessons at anytime and continue as long as you like. Individual instruction will get you off to the best start and you can learn at your own pace. Lessons require that you have an instrument to take your lessons on and practice at home.

Piano, Vocal, Accordion, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Classical Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Fiddle, Violin, Cello, Bass, Oboe, Flute, Clarinet, Drums more! We even offer a class about Music Theory!

Meet Our Teachers

All of our Musik Haus teachers have been carefully selected. They have studied and continue to study and learn better, and more enjoyable ways to teach music. Many of them are professional musicians who play and entertain personally, with worship groups, in bands, orchestras, symphonies and concerts.

CHRIS BONTOS

Guitar | Bass |Dobro | Mandolin | Sitar
Chris loves all music, but is especially passionate about eastern and worldly music. He has played the guitar for years and spent time in bands touring the country and recording in studios. Chris has been teaching guitar lessons for years and would like to teach more sitar to interested students. His desire is to introduce the Eastern attitude of music.

Barry enjoys working with new students. He believes his lessons with all students should be fun. His musical preferences include blues, folk, country, and some rock.

FRANK HADDAS

Drums | Percussion
"My first drum lesson was 60 years ago. I love teaching music because I believe you should pass on a gift. I received a gift many years ago; it was the gift of music. I have played in various groups including orchestras, brass bands, rhythm and blues bands, rock bands, and jazz bands. Currently I play with the Northern Michigan Brass Band, the Gaylord Orchestra, the Gaylord Band and the group at church."

SALLY HANES

Piano
Sally began learning the piano at a young age. Classically trained, she has been teaching for 22 years. She is the music director for her local church and plays for various events throughout Northern Michigan. Sally believes that learning to play a musical instrument at any age is a gift for a lifetime.

JOYCE HOLLENBAUGH

Piano | Vocal | Violin
"I have been teaching (both privately and in school systems) for many years in Canada, the Caribbean, and the USA I grew up studying Piano, violin, and voice and have my Associates Music Degree in Vocal Performance and Piano Pedogogy. I welcome students 5 years old and older who like to have fun while they learn!"

SUSIE JOHNSON

Guitar | Mandolin
"I have been teaching beginning guitar for a year and a half. My students inspire me. It is awesome to see them discover and grow in their music abilities. What FUN!

I enjoy practicing and playing guitar, mandolin, and also tanpura. My other interests include gardening, reading, and yoga."

GARY KERSTING

Guitar
Gary has been teaching fingerstyle guitar for more than 20 years. He plays regularly with several worship teams in the Petoskey and Charlevoix area.

JOHN KIRBY

Guitar
John plays a variety of music and has been in several bands. He has taught guitar for too many years to count. John teaches his students the kind of music they enjoy and incorporates music theory into the lessons to get them to where they want to eventually be in their music life.

MARY JANE KIRBY

Mary Jane loves teaching music. She has been giving lessons for over 55 years and enjoys learning a new instrument every year. She has years of experience playing in church and several bands.

JUDY MAGSIG

Violin | Viola | Cello | Mandolin | Dulcimer | Piano | Recorder
Judy received her bachelors degree in Elementary Education and Music from Alma College. She is an accomplished musician and has played in orchestras and symphonies all over Northern Michigan. While having taught music for over 40 years she tells us she loves watching children and seeing their faces shine when they master a skill.

"My philosophy is anybody can learn an instrument if they really want to. They may not become artists at it but they have a right to take lessons to help them learn a skill that will make them happy even if they only play for themselves."

AL SCOTT

Piano | Vocal | Music Theory
Al's vocal lessons include emphasis on Voice Training and Artistry, and natural sound production with reliable pitch and projection. His piano lessons include emphasis on style, posture, technique, and sight-reading. He also has developed and taught multi-grade-level workshops in Music Theory & Composition, and is available for advanced tutoring to prepare high school students for the AP college music entrance exam.

Al has a background in opera, musical theater, chorale, and popular music. He is an active member of Music Teachers Association national, Michigan, and local chapters.

JUDY SLOCUM

Guitar | Mandolin | Banjo | Fiddle | Clarinet | Sax
Judy graduated from Boyne City HS in 1970. From there she went on to Northern Michigan University where she earned her degree in music. She has been teaching lessons all over the area since 1972... that's over 45 years! That includes 20+ years here at Musik Haus. Judy was honored with an induction into the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. Music has always been predominant in her family. She loves country (old style), bluegrass, and gospel music.
